Freemasons still award mortarboards to graduates

After a Mason is given the Third Degree, he becomes a Master.

After earning a Masters Degree, candidates for illumination continue to apply themselves to study of the Arts and Sciences; grammar, rhetoric, logic, mathematics, geometry, music, and astrology – working their way toward higher and higher “degrees” from which vantage they can understand previously hidden (i.e. occult) truths.
